Tridacna Bronze Mortar and Pestle

JADE OF THE SEA

The Giant Clam (Tridacna gigas) is close to extinction   An unintended and arguably unforeseen victim of the international ban on elephant tusks.

Wealthy Chinese consumers have discovered an alternative to carved ivory.  The shells of the giant clam, known as “Jade of the Sea” the shells command prices upward of $12,000 each.  Craftsmen carve the shells into bracelets, soap dishes, bookends, and other trinkets.

HOLOTYPE FOR AN ALTERNATIVE ZOOLOGICAL RECORD

The Tridacna Mortar and Pestle offers an alternative zoological record where a mythical undersea creature forms an ancient tool in lieu of a pearl.

The organic layers and natural textures are sculpted directly onto the wax form then cast.  A deep aqua/jade patina is applied to the outside of the mortar.  Highlights are polished bronze.
